Queen’s Reply The Governor-General (Sir Arthur Porritt) has received the following reply from the Queen to the message he sent on the investiture of the Prince of Wales: “I thank you and the Government and people of New Zealand most sincerely for your kind message. This is 4 inches below the average recorded from January to June, and 13.35 inches below that recorded in the same period last year. $18,700 Bid Fails A house on a section of one rood 36 perches at 84 Scarborough Road, Sumner,. was passed in at $18,700 at auction yesterday. Built to an Austrian design, the house has two bedrooms and central heating, and overlooks Christchurch. Bidding started at $16,500 and rose in $2OO bids and one $lOO bid to $lB,OOO, when seven $lOO bids were received. The house, which has a Government valuation of $10,250, was auctioned by Mr M. T. Beasley, of Beasley, Packard and Chamberlain, Ltd. Unexpected Trip Captain R. H. Cullerton, a pilot for the Wellington Harbour Board, boarded the Federal Steam Navigation Company’s vessel Essex at the wharf on Wednesday evening and piloted it to the Wellington harbour entrance, reaching open sea about 10 p.m. Strong winds and high seas, however, made it impossible for him to return to the pilot launch, which was attempting to come alongside. McQuarrie, left yesterday to take up a twoyear Volunteer Service Abroad assignment in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. Mr McQuarrie, aged 21, will be stationed at Betio, on the island of Tarawa. His work will include the maintenance of the communications receivers and transmitters used in the islands’ administration. The islands of the group are widely spread and depend almost entirely on radio for communication.
