LOTUS F.W.D.

Lotus has revealed details of its new four-wheel drive Formula I car to journalists in Britain. McLaren, Matra, B.R.M. and Brabham are expected to announce similar cars in the next few months.

The new Lotus appeared for the first time at the Dutch G.P., but it ran in practice only. The Lotus 63 is powered by the same 3-litre Ford Cosworth unit used at present, but the engine is reversed, with the gearbox in front. The five-speed gearbox drives through transfer gears to the left side of the car, and drive shafts carry the power to front and rear differentials. The car’s structure is of monocoque design, and the rubberised fuel tanks hold 40 gallons.

Both front and rear suspensions and drive components are mounted on separate steel tube sub-frames.
