Obstinate Scots Defy Best N.Z. Bowling

(From R. T. BBITTZNDEN, N.Z.P.A. special correspondent)

GLASGOW.

The obstinate Scots battled all day against New Zealand at the Hamilton Crescent ground yesterday, with M. J. Allan the most stubborn of all.

There was not any great fluency about Allan’s batting, just the sort of prudent measures one might expect of an Edinburgh stockbroker. Four years ago, he batted very patiently for 99 not out against New Zealand, and yesterday his 54 was mainly responsible for Scotland reaching 211. By close of play, New Zealand had made 45 for the loss of one wicket' in 36 minutes and 11 overs. The pitch and the scoring were both leisurely and it took Scotland nearly five hours and a quarter to make its run\ There was much to admire in the tenacity of the batsmen, but the New Zealand bowlers, notwithstanding a rather slow pitch, must have felt they should have done better. TAYLOR IMPROVES They beat the bat fairly often and had many vociferous appeals, but their progress was arrested by Allan, who was in 202 minutes. He made many good and healthy hits and was strongly supported by his captain, J. Brown, who shared a partnership of 38 in 67 minutes, by G. F. Godard, 44 in 58 minutes, and by K. M. Hardie, who was with him while 31 were added in 44 minutes. Scotland’s batsmen rather lacked strokes and they made the New Zealand bowling look better than it was, although there was no mistaking the improvement in control by B. R. Taylor and some good efforts by others. Taylor moved the ball off the pitch quite awkwardly. R. 0. Collinge, in long spells, maintained pace and

hostility and should have had a much better return than two late-order batsmen. He was distinctly unlucky, and so too was D. R. Hadlee, who i suffered regularly from snicks 1 through close-set fields. , He had not taken a wicket in earlier practice matches ■ and it was a great relief, for ' him when he took his first : for New Zealand yesterday. But he was momentarily unaware of it , Not for the first time he ; whipped the ball through and 1 beat the batsman's defence. There was no appeal and Hadlee, not being the demonstrative type, simply looked skywards. ! But the batsman was Scot- 1 land’s captain, Brown, and he * walked because he had given ;a faint touch to the wicketkeeper. H. J. Howarth was given a lot of bowling and he acquitted himself satisfactorily. He could extract only slow turn but in general he was tidy. B. W. Yuile was not very aggressive and V. Pollard, leading the side, used himself sparingly. Three hard catches were dropped—to add to a rather long list for so early in a tour—but K. J. Wadsworth held everything which came his way and looks like making a very useful second wicket-keeper. SCOTLAND First Innings A. Steele b Howarth .. ..25 A. M. Zuill b Taylor .. 6 J. G.
