Mike Haynes Goes Well At Trentham

"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON.

Mika Haynes and the veteran, Kumai. did wall at Trantham yesterday during a relatively light morning's work In preparation for the opening of the Wellington winter mooting tomorrow. Fog prevented the timing of early gallop,, but while the mist hid the peg, at the top of the course it was possible to see the last two furlongs of the trials which were not timed.

After an easy winter the track Is in excellent condition and would need a good deal of rain to make it soft. Trials yesterday took place mostly on the No. 3 grass. Mike Haynes (Rowe) was one of those which were timed, and he ran 3Dsec for the last three furlongs of his work. More attractive than his time was the easy way he galloped. Kumai (G. Smith) went a mile and a quarter with Golden Summit (Marsh) and Macdonald (Taylor). Golden Summit, not surprisingly, beat Kumai by a length and a half without elfort, but the grey showed all his old determination to keep after Golden Summit without being kicked along.

Chief Warrior (Rowe) started at the mile and sprinted his last three furlongs vigorously. He too looks well, but his form is not as good as that of Mike Haynes, his stablemate. Bargain Hunter ran a smart half-mile in 51 4-ssec, the last three furlongs in 37 4-ssec, which might have been the fastest three by any of the halfmilers. In spite of his connections' dissatisfaction with his weight. Bargain Hunter might

be a danger in the Stewards'. Cambridge Fair (Taylor) beat Head Off (Weaver) by six lengths over five furlongs, the last tour in 01 4-ssec and three in 38 4-ssec. It made Head Off look bad, but his last start suggested he will show more dasn tomorrow.

Tosh (Marsh) ran three furlongs In 38sec. He ran a fair race at Hastings two starts after winning at Auckland, but he would be rated a better chance in the Whyte Handicap if there was rain.

Lyveden (Smith) ran the last three furlongs of a lap in 39sec. He has come up well after winning at Wanganui on Tuesday. Spray Doone (Taylor) ran a mile and a half, sprinting the last three furlongs in 39 3-ssec.

Change (Weaver), which is to contest the Parliamentary Handicap on Wednesday, went nine furlongs, the last half-mile in s«sec and three furlongs in 41sec.

Only three horses schooled. Rocky Lane (Green) went twice over one of the trial hurdles, making a better jump the second time, when he went faster. Afterwards he went once round, sprinting the last three furlongs.

Marco Lass (Bell), making her first acquaintance of the Trentham country, took a good look at each of the five fences she jumped, stepping close into each one and giving most plenty of air.

Beauset (Smith) jumped the same five fences, but stopped at the second of them. After the first four served to warm him up he made an appreciably better job of the boards at the three furlongs.
