OVERSEAS TRADING

SYDNEY The boomlot was not sustained on the Sydney Stock Exchange yesterday: the market opened on a weak note and moved gradually downwards throughout most of the morning. However, a strong rally occurred in the afternoon and most stocks recovered well, although it was only in the industrials that rises outnumbered falls at the close: Despite the lack of strength in the sector as a whole, there were good Individual gains in the miners. Hamersley put on another 50 to 1300. Market leader B.H.P. recovered particularly well from weak early trading to close 15 higher at 1605.

MELBOURNE The Melbourne mining and oil market held Wednesday’s levels after a shaky start this morning when profit taking forced prices down. The buying strength appeared in the afternoon, lifting heavy-weights and many speculatives back to or above Wednesday’s closing levels. At the close rises were ahead of falls 690 to 40. Western Mining stood out with a rise of 70 to 1140; Hamersley which had sales during the morning at 1250 closed at 1310. B.H.P. put on 15 to close at 1600.
