TURNOVER TAX

No Support By Chamber

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, July 3.

The Auckland Chamber of Commerce council decided today not to support a proposal by the Auckland Regional Authority to set up a turnover tax to obtain revenue for a regional development fund.

Members approved a report by a special committee of the chamber, set up to examine the proposal. The A.R.A. estimate was that the tax would amount to between $1 to $2 per $lOOO of turnover. The report said the committee had been unable to support tax. Price increases would qccur on a broad front, thus including items on which it was preferable to maintain existing price levels. There would be no distinction between items of necessity and luxury.
