Clyde Road Lights

Sir,—l thank you for printing Mr Rich’s reply to my letter regarding this dangerous crossing. In his reply he

states that all turning traffic must give way to pedestrians crossing with the “Cross now” sign showing. This is probably the legal interpretation, but I find (having watched this crossing on many occasions) that at least 50 per cent of motorists, once they get the green light, take off regardless, and not too slowly, either. I have come to the conclusion that it is much safer to cross Clyde Road, Fendalton Road, or Memorial Avenue a good 20 or 30 yards away from the marked crossings and lights as you then have only straight lines of traffic to contend with. The “Barnes dance” was the answer, but apparently the traffic authorities do not want it It works well at Colombo and Gloucester Streets, does it not?—Yours, etc., C. L. CROWLEY. July 2, 1969.
