Germ Warfare

Sir, —Our committee would like to commend “The Press” on the feature article by Stuart McMillan last Saturday and the editorial comment on Monday on the subject of germ warfare. An adequate convention to outlaw biological weapons is urgently needed, but in the meantime several nations are conducting research which they claim to be “defensive” while accusing other nations of aggressive intent. You have hit upon a way of removing this “defence” excuse. If all research against lethal diseases, whether occurring unintentionally or introduced deliberately, were internationally handled through the World Health Organisation, there would be no excuse for any germ warfare establishment in any country. Can New Zealand at the United Nations propose both the outlawing of biological weapons and the internationalising of health research?—Yours, etc., ROSE PLUMRIDGE. Secretary, Christchurch branch, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. July 1,1969.
