Bench And Bar Pay Tribute Tributes to Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., a former senior stipendiary magistrate in Christchursch, who died this week in Tauranga, were paid by the Bench and the Canterbury District Law Society in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The Court then adjourned for five minutes as a mark of respect

Mr E. S. J. Crutchley, S.M., the senior magistrate, said that ,Mr Ferner had given long and valued service to his country and to the law. He had administered the law with firmness and discretion, and had earned the respect of his brother magistrates and the public. Mr Ferner, he said, would be remembered particularly for his work among young offenders in the jurisdiction of the Children's Court His mother had been active in having the Children’s' Court established in New Zealand. The president of the Law Society (Mr J. ,E- Millar) said that Mr Ferner would be remembered by all but the younger practitioners in Christchurch. In his 17 years in Christchurch he had earned the respect of all practitioners for his ready grasp of the law.

Those present in court included the Christchurch magistrates—Messrs H. J. Evans, P. L. Molineaux, and ! W. F. Brown—Mr E. A. Lee, a former senior magistrate in . Christchurch, Mr J. D. Kin- , der, S.M., of Timaru, and Chief Superintendent G. S. Austing.
