Peninsula Snowfall

Snow fell to low levels on Banks Peninsula yesterday and, last evening motorists were advised that chains were necessary on many roads at more than 1000 ft. Some of the very high roads on the Peninsula were reported to be impassable. The Akaroa County Council engineer (Mr F. Stone) said that snow fell heavily yesterday morning but many roads were cleared during the day. Considerable snow fell on the tops during the day but there was rain and sleet at lower levels.

Many Banks Peninsula farmers are reported to be concerned at the possibility of stock losses, and at the effect of the bad weather on feed. The Automobile Association (Canterbury) advised last evening that the Lewis Pass route to the West Coast was open and clear but that motorists using the Sprlngfleld-Otira road should carry chains. There was some light snow on the Hundaiees, between Christchurch and Kaikoura, but the road was clear.
