Protesters Placated

(N.Z.P. A .-Reuter—Copy rlflht; WASHINGTON, July 2. Thirty Negro demonstrators ended a day-long sit-in at the Department of Justice today, despite their earlier vow not to leave “until we see some black faces behind these desks.” The demonstrators, from four southern States, had camped in the offices of the Attorney-General (Mr John Mitchell) during the morning, but dispersed quietly at the end of normal business hours.

They were addressed by Mr Mitchell, who assured them that the Federal government would continue to force Southern schools to have integrated classrooms. The demonstrators had been upset by reports that the Nixon Adminstration was slowing down efforts to enforce desegregation in State-owned schools. Mr Mitchell told them: “The Government will not drag its feet. We intend to enforce the civil rights laws and carry out court decisions.”
