Israel Warned On Jerusalem

(N.Z.P .A.-Reuter—Copyright) NEW YORK, July 2. The Big Four Powers warned Israel today to refrain from taking measures that might change the status of Jerusalem.

The warning came from the delegates of the four countries in the Security Council on the second day of a debate on a Jordanian charge that Israel was planning the total annexation of the Holy City. The United States Ambassador, Mr Charles Yost, said

that the Israelis had “no right to make changes in laws or in administration other than those which are temporarily necessitated by their security interest.” Lord Caradon, of Britain, said that to prejudice the future of Jerusalem would bar the door to peace and make another conflict inevitable.

Mr Alexei Zakarof, of the Soviet Union, backed Jordan’s proposal that a worldwide arms embargo be applied against Israel while Mr Armand Berard, of France, said any measures or legislative decisions taken by Israel .to modify Jerusalem’s status were invalid. Israeli commandos struck at Egyptian coastal patrol posts during the night in the second raid across the Suez Canal in 48 hours.

An Israeli Army spokesman, announcing the raid in Tel Aviv this morning, said that 13 Egyptian soldiers were killed and one captured by the commandos.

All the Israeli raiding party returned safely, he said. Three Egyptian coastal posts on the Gulf of Suez were hit by the commandos in last night's attack, the spokesman added. Two nights earlier Israeli commandos damaged pylons carrying high tension power lines in the Sawhaj area in upper Egypt, about 140 miles south of Cairo.
