Alexander Of Tunis
Sir, Field-Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis, Colonel of the Irish Guards, is dead; undoubtedly one of Britain’s very greatest war leaders. To some of us, however, “Alex,” as he was affectionately known and venerated, far outside the relatively intimate circle of the Brigade of Guards, meant far more than that. To his brilliant and amazingly diversified attri butes, his personal courage, his unfailing courtesy and charm, his genius for inspiring confidence and affection among his men, to the astonishing record of his almost legendary achievements during war, should be added a characteristic that might well prove his most enduring and endearing memorial: his ineluctable modesty and absolute innocence of the slightest suggestion of self-adver-tisement. Yes, indeed, a very, very fine and great man.— Yours, etc., ILAM. June 18, 1969.
