Quaker’s Visit

A young Japanese Quaker, Miss Masako Yamanouchi, will visit Christchurch next month to speak on Vietnam, where she has been working in refugee camps.

A graduate in political science from Bryn Mawr College, in the United States, Miss Yamanouchi’s New Zealand visit will be under the auspices of the International Committee of Conscience on Vietnam, which has its headquarters in New York. In 1966 she went to South Vietnam as a refugee worker for the American Friends Service Committee and later transferred to the Buddhist School of Youth for Social Service, where she has given distinctive service. This school was founded by Thlch Nhat Hanh, who toured New Zealand about 18 months ago. Miss Yamanouchi’s reports to the International Committee of Conscience on Vietnam were described as "masterpieces of colour and analysis” by the secretary (Mr Alfred Hassler) recently. After a speaking tour of the United States and Europe, she has been visiting refugee camps in the demilitarised sone in Vietnam. She will arrive in Auckland at the end of this month.
