A.A.Favours 1mm. Tyre-Tread Depth
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 18. A tyre-tread depth of one millimetre across three-quarters of the tread and round the entire tyre circumference has been advocated by the Automobile Association.
Speaking in Auckland today, the president of the association, Mr J. B. Horrocks, said that over many years thei association had been concerned about the lack of defi- 1 nite standards for the condition of tyres. The association held the view that had general support throughout the world, that bald tyres were definitely dangerous, he said.
“At our 1968 annual conference, after a very detailed examination of the problem, we recommended to the Ministry of Transport that the warrant of fitness requirement should be a minimum tread depth of one millimetre across three-quarters of the: tread round-the tyre’s entire circumference. This is exactly in line with the law in, the United Kingdom and we still believe it is reasonable; “Nevertheless, this is 40 per cent less than the American recommended minimum —not legally enforceable and being l/16in, the same as in New Zealand. “In view of the problems which have arisen here we would ask the Minister tq
consider the United Kingdom: standard of one millimetre. If experience indicates this is insufficient a greater depth, could be required in the: future,” he said.
