N.D.C. COUNCIL Membership To Be Announced Soon
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 18. Membership of the National Development Council, the establishment of which was recommended by the National Development Conference early last month, is expected to be announced by the conference’s chairman, the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) later this week.
The council will have about 12 members, with Cabinet Ministers as chairman and deputy chairman, and the other members representing major interests in the community.
The composition was recommended by the conference’s steering committee and later adopted by the conference. Authorities in Wellington said today that the membership of the council had been decided, but awaited formal approval from Mr Marshall. Mr Marshall is expected to be chairman of the council and the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) deputy chairman. Other members are expected to include representatives of Federated Farmers, the Manufacturers’ Federation, the Federation of Labour, the universities, the fishing industry, the tourist industry and the forestry industry. The council will keep under review the targets and objectives set by the conference and the measures necessary for their implementation, and will also consider matters re-
> ferred to it by the Government. It will also advise the Gov- ' emment on the establishment and functions of conference . sector councils and consider , matters referred td it by the councils.. ■ When the question of coun-
cil membership was debated at the conference the chair- ' man of the steering committee and Secretary to the Treasury (Mr H. G. Lang) assured delegates that membership would be based on individual ability and not just on sector representation. .
