$306,000 From Halls Appeal

The amount received from Lincoln College’s halls-of-residence appeal is $306,000. The appeal, begun two years ago, will be continued for three mpre years.

Although short of the target of $350,000, the result is considered reasonably satisfactory when the difficult economic conditions during the period of the appeal are taken into account. In another respect, however, the result is extraordinarily good; the amount obtained has come from little more than 30 per cent of the original list of potential supporters of the college among business houses, farmers, parents, staff and old students. The contributions have enabled the college to begin tile erection of; two halls. These will accommodate 168 students by, it is hoped, the beginning of the 1970 academic session. Forty-eight of these places are to be financed by jhe Department of External Affairs from Colombo Plan funds, leaving 120 to be financed from appeal donations supported by Government subsidy. The tempo of the appeal had diminished, Dr I. D. Blair, continuation chairman

of the appeal organisation, said yesterday, but the effort was continuing steadily and the college still hoped that those from whom support could be expected would find an opportunity to contribute soon. More Contributions In the last two months 30 more old students had contributed $lOOO, bringing the contribution of 745 old students to about $60,000. Recently a group of Eiffelton farmers had given nearly $2OOO and the Mackenzie branch of Federated Farmers, through an agreed levy on members, had offered $llOO to be ' used specifically to finance a D. M. France memorial room as a tribute to a former Mackenzie farmer who had been particularly interested in the college.- ; Dr Blair said that many business houses had supported the appeal, a large number by way of advertising contracts that had been acknowledged elsewhere. In addition to' business-house donations previously acknowledged strong support had come recently from the Southland Frozen Meat Company, Ltd, Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd, Caltex (N.Z.), Ltd, Merck, Sharp and Dohme, Ltd, and A. S. Paterson, Ltd. Especially heartening had

been the donations made spontaneously by organisa- 1 tions such as the New Zealand Society of Accountants and Civil Defence, which had met at the college for semi-

Ilnars or special courses. This ■1 continuing support from sec- ■ tions of the community indi--5 cated that the objective of I the appeal might yet be -1 achieved.
