Armstrong’s Surprise Defeat

G. R. Saunders caused a major upset by defeating J. Armstrong In the eighth round of the senior table tennis competition last night. Armstrong had not been beaten in singles in inter-club play this season, having won his previous 21 matches. However the superior record of his opponent did not affect the determination of Saunders, who stood up to the table and played an Intelligent game, to defeat Armstrong In three games. Saunders kept his errors to a minimum and answered any loose ball with a sharp hit. In a later match, Armstrong staged a brilliant recovery from 4-11 down to Heat M. R. Spinks, 21-19, in the deciding game.

Linwood I, at present second equal in the competition, was hard pressed to beat the lowerplaced Avonslde 11. Both teams had a regular member absent and had to substitute with lower grade players. M. Warren and B. Beaumont (Avonside) both played well to defeat G. W. Maklnson, but a vital win by H. Taylor over T. Abernethy gave Linwood the contest, 7-5. Wallabies, with the support of R. M. Radford, were surprisingly beaten by Dallington. B. T. Edwards (Dallington) led the way with an unbeaten record, while for Wallabies each player scored one single win.
