Brisbane Cup Surprise

Galleon King, backed from 80 to 1 to start to 33 to 1. won the State’s richest race, the 831.650 Brisbane Cup at Eagle Farm yes, tcrday. Galleon King, third into the Straight, bounded to the front and scored decisively by a length apd a quarter from Roman Consul (7 to 1), with a length to Bobalex (14 to 1), and the favourite, Sandy's Hope (4 to 1), which dead-heated for third. Galleon Ring, a four-year-old by Golden Galleon from King’s Desire, was bred in New Zealand, where he was bought for a bargain price of 8440 at the IMS yearling sales at Trentham. The sizzling pace get by Pirate Bird yesterday spreadeagled the field. Galleon King was the first horse to get to the tearaway, and led into the straight from Roman Consul, which had moved up strongly but could not peg the Brisbane stayer back in the run home. Cachondeo was fifth, followed by Laughing Eyes and Quick Dollar. Arctic Coast failed to show up. as did last year’s winner, Prominence. Raad and Wilton Park also went badly.
