Good win by Farrant
Canterbury’s leading player in this year’s Freyberg Rose Bowl golf tournament, R. M. Farrant, enhanced his prospects for national selection when he beat the New Zealand representative, G. E. Clarke (Otago) for third place in the South Island championship at Oamaru. Clarke is regarded as a prominent candidate for the New Zealand team to play In Australia In August, but his 2 and 1 loss to Farrant must have advanced the Canterbury man’s claims considerably. Farrant played stylishly at Oamaru and handled all his clubs with a touch of authority. The highlights of his performance were a three-under-par 69 in the first qualifying round and a 4 and 3 defeat of the promising Timaru player, W. L. Maw, during the match play. Farrant was three under par in this game and was level with par for the 108 holes he played at the tournament.
