Australia will spend about s9om on nine new container ships, six of which will be built in Australia for the Australian National Line, it has been announced in London. At least one of the new ships will be used for expanding trade between Australia and the east coast of North America, according to the chairman of the A.N.L. (Captain Sir John Williams). The Australian Government has already announced that the A.N.L. will now buy, instead of charter, one of three container ships built for Associated Container Transportation (Australia), Ltd, at the Bermer-Vulkan yards in Germany. Sir John Williams said the vessel, launched as Act 3, would be renamed Australian Endeavour when delivered to the A.N.L. on July 31 and would be manned by an Australian crew, several members of which were already on stand-by in Germany.
