Surprise Omission Of Club Cyclist

The omission of its 50-mile champion, P. A. Skilling, is a minor surprise in the Papanui club’s A team to contest the Canterbury final of the Hope Gibbons Shield, a 25mile cycling time trial at Yaldhurst on Saturday.

The Papanui A team is B. G. Stockwell, H. R. Bush, W. W. Thorpe, I. D. McLean, and B. R. Chisholm. Only Stockwell and Chisholm have been retained from last year’s winning riders. McLean and Chisholm possibly earned their places in the A team with fine performances in the Harry Saundercock Memorial, over 100 kilometres at Waikari last Saturday. Skilling failed to complete the course on Saturday, but he is a proven trials’ rider. Ten teams have entered for the Canterbury final, the winner of which will be eligible to take part in the national final at Levin on July 5. The Thnaru and Avon clubs have formidable A teams and they will probably provide the strongest opposition to Papanui A. The junior teams to compete for the Grant Cup at Yaldhurst on Sunday were also announced yesterday:
