TOWN DAY CHANGES
‘Supporters Grieved’’ Some country people, all good supporters of Rugby, were still very grieved at the treatment they received through the change of grounds in Christchurch on Country Day, Mr J. D. Wilson told a meeting of the executive committee of the Canterbury Rugby Subunion’s Association, yesterday. He was referring to the switching of the under-20 and the under Bst 71b TownCountry games from Lancaster Park oval to other grounds. A number of spectators from country areas had sat in No. 3 stand waiting for the first game to start, unaware of the changes, said Mr Wilson.
“The speaker system was not working and other than run up and down the stand to spread the news there was nothing we could do,” he said. “The people who go early to Rugby are mostly from the country, and they had to put themselves out to get there.” The chairman (Mr M. R. Barnett) said he had raised the matter at a meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union, and a letter of apology be sent.
The executive supported a motion by Mr F. J. Shadbolt that a letter expressing the sub-union’s concern should be sent to the Canterbury union.
