Clear Leader In Squash
The meeting of the two leading teams in the A grade squash rackets competition .last evening resulted in a narrow win to Christchurch B, by 9 games to 6, with matches level at 2-all. J. S. Crosbie, at No. 2 for Christchurch B, recovered well in his match with T. L. Williams (Old Collegians) to win the two games which gave his side victory. viz u Other teams to win were High School Old Boys, Christchurch A and Christchurch C. Points after six rounds are: Christchurch B 48, Old Collegians 44, Christchurch C 36, High School Old Boys 28, Christchurch A 23, University A 18, and University B 15. J. G. Foulds, playing top for Old Collegians, produced his best game of the season against the well-performed R. Taylor (Christchurch B). For the first two games Foulds looked a class player. His length wall shots were perfect and his cross-court drives persistently found the back corners. When an opening to kill a short ball came he made no mistake, leaving Taylor out of reach of well-produced low. hard drives.
Taylor struck a fine patch in the third game, which he won, before Foulds settled down to play almost up to the (standard he had shown in the first two games.
A surprise win was that by N. Rush (University A) over J. Mitchell (H. 5.0.8. Mitchell started with a rush, and aided by Rush’s many errors, took the first game, 9-2. Then he had a game point in the second, at <S-6. Rush rallied to 8-all and Mitchell called for a short game which Rush won 9-8.
After winning the third, Mitchell narrowly lost the fourth game, 8-10, and in the final game the score mounted steadily to 6-all. At this stage. Rush won a long rally with a beautifully delayed angle shot, whereupon a slightly disgruntled Mitchell made two errors to lose the match.
Although obviously still feeling the effects of his spell from competitive play, J. H. N. Pine (Christ’s College) proved too steady for R. D. Monk (Christchurch A). Pine was reluctant to run to the back corners but Monk failed to take full advantage of this. The two fittest players tn the competition, the Olympic hockey representatives. S. G. Maister (H. 5.0.8. and J. Borren (University A), met in a long match. Maister has relied on outrunning his previous opponents but in Borren he found one who seemed equally fit but possessed greater ball control. The result was a very entertaining
encounter won by Borren in five games. Results: Christchurch A 8, Christ's College 2 R. D. Monk lost to J. H. N. Pine. 6-9. 9-2, 7-9, 4-9; L. G. Milne beat D. G. Hamilton. 9-7. 9-6. 9-6: N. W.
