END TO STEAM
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, June 10.
The West Coast railway network, including Buller, officially went over to full diesel operation today, said the station master at Westport (Mr S. Anisy). Not a single steam engine is in use on the West Coast by the Railways Department. Mr Anisy said his area was being served by two DSA diesels for shunting, two DSCS for branch lines and a DJ for mainline operation. Two steam locomotives, an AB and a WW, relics of a past era, were being held at Westport till further instructions were received.
The five diesels—all Japan-ese-built —have replaced nine steam engines.
