Road Works

Sir, —When visiting the North Christchurch shopping area at the head of Colombo Street I had difficulty in crossing a trench about a foot wide by 18in deep, with the spoil heaped up on one side. The trench ran along the footway two feet from shop fronts. Being well past the antelope stage, 1 wondered whether the council would accept responsibility had II broken a leg. Shopkeepers in this area have put up with months of inconvenience, and the council should at least] have tried to relieve the situation by placing temporary crossings in front of each shop entrance.—Yours, etc., R. J. GLEN May 29, 1969.

[The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: “The trenching referred to was for the replacement of a water service pipe and the whole of the work, including asphalting of the trench, was done in one day (May 27). It is the department’s policy to provide temporary access to shops, and if this was not done adequately any inconvenience caused is regretted.”]
