Fatal Tractor Accidents
Thirty-five deaths had resulted from tractor accidents last year, according to provisional figures, said Mr J. K. Miller, representative of Young Farmers’ Clubs on the National Safety Association, at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Federation of Young Fanner’s Clubs yesterday, but it had been conservatively estimated that 27 deaths would not have occurred had safety frames been fitted.
There was also a very good chance, he added, that most of the remainder would also have been saved.
Last year, more than 2000 tractor safety frames had been sold and there had been about 14 reports saying they had been instrumental in preventing death or serious injury.
Mr Miller said that Mr G. R. Robson, of North Canterbury, had been appointed a farm safety field officer. He would be based in Christchurch and work in the South Island north of the Clutha River.
