Lifter gained 4st. in 2yrs
yOOTBALLERS and others x who wish to gain extra bulk to aid them in their chosen sports should follow the example of the Canterbury weight-lifter, A. Butcher. Training at the Canterbury Amateur Weightlifting Association’s gymnasium in Oxford Terrace, Butcher has gained more than four stone of muscular development He gained this additional weight between the age of 18 and 22 years. His gain in muscle is the more remarkable since he was less than 10 stone when, as a junior, he re-
corded Imin 56.45ec for the half-mile. Now he is 14st 21b and Is capable of a fairly fast sprint over 100 yards. Now aged 22, he has about 25 New Zealand and Canterbury weight - lifting records to his credit He has lifted as much as 6001 b off the floor. “Anyone can gain weight if they are prepared to train with heavy weights,” said Butcher. Last week he won the Wellington provincial power lifting championship in the middle heavy-weight class. He was placed first in the 1981 b class with a New Zealand record total of 13101 b, for the three competition lifts. Gaining second placing in the 1651 b class, R. Smart, one of Canterbury’s most promising performers in Olympic style lifting, had a personal best total of 10101 b. His total was only 51b behind that of the winner. By continuing training with heavy weights Butcher says he plans to gain an extra two stone of muscle which will enable him to compete with additional advantage in the heavier weight classes. Both lifters are now training on Olympic style lifting in preparation for the New Zealand championships to be held in Christchurch next October.
