HAPPY “MISS N.Z.”
‘Miss New Zealand, 1969,” Carole Robinson, of Auckland (right), speaking to a well-wisher on the telephone at Wains Hotel, Dunedin, yesterday, before leaving for Auckland. Miss Robinson, aged 22, on Monday night became the tenth winner of the title, the Press Association reports. “I could not believe it,” she said after the decision was given by the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon). “I was concentrating so much on everything else around me that I was ‘Miss New Zealand’ before 1 realised it” Miss Robinson remained composed and calm throughout the applause which greeted her success. The youngest of eight brothers and sisters and the only one who has remained single—Miss Robinson was the secretary of the former Mayor of Auckland, Dr R. G. McElroy. Her interests include ballroom dancing, athletics and Continental cooking. In Auckland this week she will send off the biggest consignment of pedigree bulls sent from this country to the United States—her first function in her new role. In about two weeks she will welcome the bulls in New York, before taking part in the “Miss Universe” contest which will begin in Miami, Florida, on July 4. In November she will travel to London for the “Miss World” contest. Miss Robinson won a $3OOO personal appearance con-
tract, a new car, and a $lOOO wool wardrobe. The runner-up, Miss Deirdre Alison Bruton (“Miss Waikato”), will represent New Zealand at the “Queen of the Pacific” and “Miss Asia” contests. Third prize was won by “Miss Wellington,” Frances Carrick. AH 11 contestants displayed uncanny acceptance of the judges’ decisions. There were no tears, and the only sign of emotion was shown off-stage by Miss Robinson’s predecessor, Miss Christine Antunovic, who cried in her dressing-room.
