Next summer, the P.G.A. championship will rise from $5OOO to $15,000. In 1971, Mr Owens said, the fiure might be as high as $30,000. His confirmation of $15,000 for the P.G.A. title now makes the New Zealand circuit next summer worth $65,000 — almost double the figure played for last summer. The circuit begins with the New Zealand Open at Belmont, Wanganui, from November 27-29 and ends six weeks later with the P.G.A. title at Mount Maunganui.— N.Z.P.A., Auckland. REFEREE “SLATED” The Australian Rugby league team manager, Mr E. Burns, yesterday criticised the refereeing in the match between Australia and the South Island, the Sydney “Morning Herald” writer, Alan Clarkson, reported from Christchurch. Under the headline, “Manager Slates Referees,” Clarkson wrote that Mr Bums told a league judiciary inquiry that he believed the referee, Mr J. Campbell, “lost control of the game.” The “Herald” writer said that after the game, Mr Burns clashed with N.Z.R.L. council president, Dr L. J. Cooney. The Australian team manager, Clarkson related, told Dr Cooney: “We are the world champions and we would play like it if were allowed.”— N.Z.P.A., Sydney.

SCHOOLS* BADMINTON A badminton competition between 18 teams from Christchurch secondary schools will begin today. The competition, which has been sought by members of the executive of the Canterbury Badminton Association for three years, has attracted 14 boys’ and 14 girls’ teams. It will be held weekly, on each Wednesday Most games will be played at the Skellerup Hall, the badminton headquarters, but several other matches will be played in school gymnasiums.
