Narrow Lead In Squash Rackets

Ably led by its number one i player, R. Taylor. Christchurch , B took a narrow lead with 42 . points over Old Collegians, who 1 have 40, after the latest round I of the A grade squash rackets i competition. Old Collegians surprisingly ' scored only six points against ' University B; with matches level at two-all, they won by 8 games to 6. . . There is a gap of 10 points to Christchurch C with 30, followed by High School Old Boys 22, Christ's College 10, Christchurch A IS, University A 14, and university B 11. For University B, D. A. Garrett had an unexpected victory over T. L. Williams (Old Collegians). Garrett woo most unimpressive In losing to L. G. , Milne (Christchurch A) last Week, but finding Williams out of form,' he’ played steadily to notch two valuable points for his team. J.G. Foulds and M. ' R. Blank gave competent displays for Old Collegians to outgeneral their younger opponI ents, A. Naughton and B. Johns. Christchurch A had its first , win of the season, winning three of its four matches with University A.

X. D. Monk (Christchurch A) found a better length than usual after dropping the first fame to N. Rush (University A), rom then on he dominated the play, with Rush unable to gain the centre court position. The fine backhand of R. Taylor (Chrlitchurch B) again showed up, this time against the forehand ot the left-hander. J. Mitehell (H. 5.0.8. Taylor could not match Mitchell's variety in the first game but with good basic play—length, wall shots and drops and volleys —he changed the pattern of play, enabling him to produce countless low, hard backhand drives which, in time, forced errors from Mitchell.

Mitchell "recovered well In the third frame from 3-6 to level at t-all; he produced two reverse angles and two delight-fully-executed angle shots which left Taylor standing. To hit credit, Taylor was not disconcerted and he finished off that game with a typical backhand volley. Christ's College Is having a lean time without Its captain, J. H. N. Pine, who Is suffering from shin soreness. The side were well beaten by Christchurch C, although P. R. Sawtell

had a surprisingly easy win over B. Jones.
