Presentation To Cricketers
The six Canterbury members of the New Zealand cricket team, which will leave next week-end on a flve-month tour of England, India, and Pakistan, were guests at a function last .evening arranged by the Canterbury Cricket Association. G. T. Dowling, R. C. Motz, B. F. Hastings, V, Pollard, B. R. Taylor and D. R. Hadlee —each was presented with a travelling bag by the association’s president, Mr J. C. Saunders. New Zealand cricket had made a good deal of head-way
In the last few yean and the prospects were bright for this team to be one of the most successful to go on an overseas tour, said Mr Saunders. Replying on behalf of the players, Dowling, who will captain the side, said that he felt that the members of the
team—encouraged by good performances against the West Indies last season, really believed they could accomplish much on this tour. The presentations of the Redpath Cup to Hastings and the Winsor Cup to Motz were made by the president of the New Zealand Cricket Council (Mr J. G. Leggat). The Redpath Cup is awarded annually to the outstanding batsman in first-class cricket and the Winsor Cup to the outstanding bowler. It is the third time Motz has won the Winsor Cup. Mr Leggat said this year's awards had taken the shortest time on record and both choices were unanimous. During the season New Zealand cricket “had possibly moved another notch or two up the ladder,” and Hastings and Motz had both contributed greatly. The photograph shows, from left, Taylor, Dowling, Motz, Hadlee, Pollard and Hastings.
