RANKING GAMES
First Series Of Squash There were some tight, even games when the first series of Canterbury squash ranking matches were played at the Christchurch Club courts.
The improving G. Hargreaves lost a long, drawnout affair to R. Taylor. Hargreaves repeatedly allowed handy leads to slip away. Taylor hit some excellent backhands but for the most part allowed himself to be drawn into a deep driving game with little variation.
N. W. McGillivray, who was in the top seven or eight in Canterbury several years ago, had a convincing victory over A. E. Dunlop. Dunlop failed to keep McGillivray far enough back in the court, allowing him to control the play with some sparkling drop and angle shots and strong volleying.
J. W. Mitchell’s match with S. Suckling promised to be a most interesting contest but it ended abruptly at 2-1 to Mitchell in the first game, when Suckling suffered a leg injury. Results were:
P. Gallagher beat P. Steinmetz, 6-9. 9-2. 9-3. 9-0: N. B. Ullrich beat D. Marshall, 7-9, 9- 9-2 (Marshall retired at this stage); J. E. Mcßride beat N. W. Herd. 9-4. 9-2, 9-2; B. V. Hamilton beat L. G. Milne, 9-7, 10- 5-9, 9-5; D. V. Hearn beat B. S. Johns. 9-4, 9-1. 9-5; S. G. Malster beat D. A. Garrett, 9-1, 6-9, 5-9. 9-5. 9-4; J. G. FouldS beat J. S. Crosble. 9-5. 9-1. 9-3; L. G. Holden beat C. P. Murray, 9-7, 5-9, 10-9, 9-7: McGillivray beat Dunlop. 10-9. 9-4, 9-6; Taylor beat Hargreaves, 8-10, 9-5, 6-9, 10-9, 9-7; Mitchell beat Suckling 3-1 (Suckling retired hurt).
