FOREST FIRE PROTECTION
Radio System Costs $600,000 (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 16. A $600,000 very-high-fre-quency communications system would be installed throughout State exotic forests to bridge a gap in forest fire protection, the Minister of Forests (Mr Maclntyre) said today. “The Kaingaroa Forest will be the first to receive the new equipment,” he said in a statement “This is a majorrisk forest and the continued use of outmoded high-fre-quency radio systems creates a gap in the forest fire protection system that could prove disastrous.” While private forest companies in New Zealand were already using V.H.F. equipment, which provided 24-hour protection, the high-frequency system at Kaingaroa was blanketed by an intense noise level from 5 p.m. until about 8 a.m. the next day. The Government hoped to have the V.H.F. system working at Kaingaroa for the 1971 fire danger season.
