Red Cross Award
A New Zealand nurse, Sister Moya Clare McTamney, of Masterton, has been awarded the Florence Nightingale medal by the International Committee, of the Red Cross. The award is made to nurses and voluntary aids “who have distinguished themselves exceptionally by their devotiod to sick or wounded in the difficult and perilous situations which often prevail in times of war or public disasters.” Every two years, a maximum of 36 medals are issued by the international committee throughout the world. This year, 33 were awarded. Miss McTamney was the nurse in the first Red Cross refugee welfare team responsible for the welfare of 7000 refugees at An Khe, South Vietnam.
At present, she is serving in -the Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, “marking time” until she can go back to the Red Cross welfare team, If the project is continued in 1970.
