N.Z. Wins Fencing

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. New Zealand beat Australia in the fencing test which finished yesterday, by 46 bouts to 18. After winning the men’s foil (10-6) and sabre (13-3) on Saturday, the New Zealanders went on to win both the women's foil (13-3) and the epee (10-6). The women’s foil was largely a repetition of the Wellington-Australia match on Friday, with Miss G. McDermitt winning alj her bouts and all the others dropping only one. The epee was closely fought, the result flattering New Zealand. The first bout between P. Temple and the Australian captain, J. Humphries, was close. Humphreys

raced to a 3-0 lead, but Temple, changing his tactics, gradually pegged him back to 4-4 and went on to win.

Humphreys also had a close match with R. Peterson. The bout was stopped during the match when Humphreys's weapon broke in half. This appeared to disturb him and he lost after seeming to be in a winning position. E. Nye (New Zealand) and G. Mills fought the longest bout. When extra time was called at 4-4, both fighters decided to attack and accordingly they shared blows until Nye got the break at 7-6.
