Canterbury Wins Table Tennis Easily

Canterbury breezed through keen but sub-standard opposition to again retain the CoxRadford Rose Bowl at the annual northern quadrangular table tennis tournament at the Canterbury headquarters in Selwyn Street, yesterday. Canterbury thrashed West Coast without losing a match and only lost one against Marlborough. Ne’.ison was Canterbury’s toughest opponent, but it still managed to win only three matches.

The only really disappointing aspect of Canterbury’s play was the continued indifferent form of its 1968 Player of the Year, Ling Nan Ming. His play looked listless when he lost to the defensive tactics of the veteran Nelson player. L. N. T. Wells, in straight games, 21-14, 21-18. In beating West Coast and Marlborough, Nelson was again second and Marlborough defeated West Coast to keep it away from the bottom rung. The Nelson match with Marlborough was the only even encounter.

After the men’s and women’s singles matches had been completed the pair were locked together at 12 matches each but superior combination in the mixed doubles clinched Nelson s victory, 15 matches to 13. Marlborough lost the women’s contest 11 matches to 1, but had two of its leading players, Misses C. M. Borck and E. M. Foley been available Marlborough would probably have been elevated to second place now that Nelson’s former top woman player. Miss G. M. Kemp, is living in Wellington. In theory the tournament has great merit but because of the tremendous differences in standard between the top and bottom teams, the enjoyment of the players was limited. The third-placed team, Marlborough, still beat the last team. West Coast, comfortably, 23-5. If this tournament is to retain its undoubted value, efforts should be made to limit the Canterbury team, possibly to under-23 players. M. R. Spinks was the only other Canterbury man to lose a match. In a very close encounter he lost to D. McKenzie (Marlborough), a player of similar style, 23-25, 21-23. Spinks had his chances but McKenzie continued to loop effectively to snatch a surprise victory.

Ling Nan Ming also had some problems against Marlborough. He was taken to three games by its top player, J. Mears, and McKenzie extended, him to 22-20 in the second game of their match.

In spite of having her interclub performances severely restricted, Canterbury’s leading woman. Mrs T. May, came through unbeaten as did Miss M. P. Green.

Mrs J. G. Green, playing No. 2 for Canterbury, lost to the Nelson player, Mrs J. Goodall.
