INJURED BACK

Quirke Out Of Squad The New Brighton centreforward, W. Quirke, has been forced to withdraw from the Canterbury representative squad and will miss the match against the English F.A. on May 28. Quirke has been suffering all season from an injury to his back and had to leave the field at half-time during the match between Brighton and Western on Saturday. He is to have concentrated physiotherapy treatment.

The Canterbury team will now be selected from the 16 players remaining in the squad: D. Phillips, O. Nuttridge, G. Davis, K. France, G. Griffiths, W. McKenna, N. Mclntosh, A. Gowans. T. Conley, C. Attridge, S. Smith, G. Storer, C. Cawley, G. Marshall, F. Madrussan and B. Wilkinson.

The selector-coach, Mr R. C Carter, has decided that the two goal-keepers. Phillips and Nuttridge, will each play half a match.

“I have taken this decision because of the farcical situation that arose when Nuttridge was told that he would not be needed for the national trial in Wellington,** Mr Carter said.

“I hope that by giving Nuttridge half a match against the English F.A. he will have the opportunity before the national selectors and coach to press his claims for the national team.”

Nuttridge, who had been a reserve for the national trial in Wellington yesterday. spent Saturday on the sideline. He had withdrawn from his club team earlier in the week under the impression he would be needed for the national trials.

It was not until late on Thursday night that he was told he would not be needed, after City had already informed its reserve goal-keeper, A. Fleming, that he would be playing on Saturday.
