Technical Wins Women’s Basketball Trophy
A strong Technical senior team won all games in its section and beat the semi-finalist winner, St Nicholas senior reserve B, 21-14, in the final of the annual Canterbury Basketball Association’s handicap tournament for the Falloon Trophy at' South Hagley courts on Saturday.
The tournament is designed to give lower grade teams a chance to play against senior teams. St Nicholas senior reserve B did well to win all its games in its section, beat the Sacred Heart senior team in the semi-final and press Technical in the final. There were 18 teams entered in the senior section from senior, senior reserve and senior reserve B grades. Senior grade teams started from scratch with senior reserve teams with an advantage of six goals and senior reserve B teams an advantage of nine goals. The teams were divided into three sections, each team played five games. The winners of sections two and three played a semi-final and the winner played Technical, the winner of section one, in the final.
New Brighton, the leader in the senior competition, did not enter its senior team, nor did Teachers’ College or Cashmere.
The intermediate section with teams from the second, third and fourth grades, had 21 sec-
tion winners and the junior section with teams from fourth grade B, fifth and sixth grade had 10 section winners. There" were 190 teams entered in the tournament.
In the senior competition, Sacred Heart won its section but lost to St Nicholas in the semifinal.
Surprisingly, Hagley A, » Hagley and St Nicholas senior teams did not win any games in their section play. SACRED HEART LOSE Sacred Heart lost its first game of the day to St Nicholas senior reserve B in the senior semi-final. It began by scoring four quick goals with J. Harnett, at goal attack shooting accurately. But St Nicholas jumped well to pass the ball over the Sacred Heart defence and increased its nine point advantage to 13-9 at half-time.
Sacred Heart seemed disconcerted at the time it had taken it to even its handicap and lost control of its combinations in the second half.
The St Nicholas goal shooters worked well in the circle. J. Marquet at goal attack scored steadily to increase the St Nicholas lead to 16-10 at full time. TECHNICAL SUPERIOR
St Nicholas faced a polished opposition in the Technical senior team, which played a fast game to catch its nine goal handicap in the first four minutes of play. It finally won 21-14. S. Norman, the Technical goal shoot placed some extremely difficult shots and S.. Langrope (Technical) centre, hurried the pace to keep the scoring high. S. Caldwell, the St Nicholas goal defence occasionally managed to clear the ball from the Technical goal third but found M. Holland, the Technical goal attack too swift in her movements and shooting. St Nicholas held a two point lead, 13-11, at half-time but Technical ran away with the game in the second half and allowed St Nicholas to score only once more.
