VIETNAM TROOPS

Comments By P.M.

(N.Z. frees Association)

WELLINGTON, May 18. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) declined at the week-end to state New Zealand’s position on withdrawal of Its troops from Vietnam should the United States reduce its forces. He said: “The basis of which allied troops might be withdrawn from Vietnam, and the timing of any withdrawals which might be agreed on, are obviously going to be among the important questions discussed at the forthcoming meeting of the Vietnam allies.

“Accordingly, I should not wish to lay down a detailed New Zealand position at this time.”

Mr Holyoake had been asked to comment on the question of withdrawal in view of the statement by the Australian Prime Minister (Mr Gorton) in Parliament this week, that Australia would not immediately follow suit if the United States reduced its force.
