Irianese Warned
(N.Z.P.A .-Reuter—Copyright) DJAKARTA May 14. The Indonesian military commander in West Irian (Brigadier-General Sarwo Edhie) has warred Irianese tribesman that his troops will smash any further uprising in the former Dutch territory. The Antara news agency today quotes General Edhie as saying: “If they choose to take up arms, there is no other alternative for me but to crush them.” This was General Edhie’s first statement on the recent events in his territory, where Ikari tribesmen rebelled against Indonesian rule by blockading five airfields three weeks ago. General Edhie said the Ikari tribesmen had now returned to their villages and had helped to find parachutes left by troops in the jungles in the Enarotali area, in the Central Western Highlands. He described the dropping of paratroops in the area to quell the uprising as “a show of force in a bloodless operation.”
