Communists Sentenced

The leader of a group of 16 self - confessed Communists was today sentenced in Athens to life imprisonment for trying to overthrow the military-backed Greek Government. A panel of five courtmartial judges sentenced 11 others to prison terms of 20 years to eight months; and the remaining four, including two women, received suspended sentences of five years to one year. ' The trial, which began on May 12, was marked by allegations from many of the accused that they had been tortured by security police during interrogation. Most of the defendants declared defiantly that they were members of the outlawed Greek Communist Party.
