VIOLENCE RENEWED
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) KUALA LUMPUR, May 14. A wave of violence has struck Kuala Lumpur for the second night in succession, as police and troops battle against roaming gangs in various parts of the city.
Fighting has again broken out between Malays and Chinese.
Describing the situation as “not good”, a police spokesman said that the 3000 security forces in the field were being fully extended trying to quell the renewed outbreaks of racial violence, which had already resulted in several deaths. At least one sub-post office had been set on fire and several bodies found by the roadside.
Gangs of between 60 and 100 strong in some areas, and between 500 and 700 in others, are reported to be moving round the city, which is under full curfew.
