SHIPPING LINE
Union Criticises Statement Seamen attending the monthly stopwork meeting of the New Zealand Seamen’s Union at the Lyttelton branch on Tuesday criticised a statement by the retiring president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce (Mr S. C. Scott) concerning a national shipping line. Mr Scott said in Dunedin recently that the public should remember that New Zealand already had a national shipping line which, due to the seamen's award, was costing the taxpayer dearly.
The secretary of the Lyttelton branch of the Seamen’s Union (Mr D. J. Morgan) said in a statement that Mr Scott’s claim that New Zealand already had a national shipping line could only be in reference to the railway ferries the Aramoana and the Aranui.
“Anyone who would suggest that this Picton-Wellington service is costing the taxpayer dearly is surely out of touch with both his subject and reality," Mr Morgan said. “Actual figures are not available but the annual earnings of these two vessels are in excess of $500,000.”
