ALL-WEATHER SEATS FOR BARBECUE
Easily built barbecue seats make attractive allweather fixtures in the garden. The seats (fig. 1) are made of hardwood, are cheap to construct and when painted with harmonising colours make an attractive addition to the outdoors. The position of the 4in by 2in cross rails and the supporting 4in by 4in uprights are shown by the dotted lines. The seat itself consists of 4in by l}in battens spaced one inch apart. The top battens should have the top edges to sides and ends rounded to about tin radius. For ease of painting all the hardwood should be dressed all round. Figure two is a section through the seat showing how the cross rails are housed into the uprights.. This joint should be given a heavy coat of paint before being secured by the halfinch bolts as shown. The supporting 4in by 4in uprights are let into the ground 12in and concreted in as shown. The holes should not be larger than nine inches square. When placing the seat before concreting make sure that it is both plumb and level then stay it in position before placing the concrete. Figure three shows a method for securing the seat members to the supporting frame. The centre seat batten will have to be fixed in this manner but if desired the two outside battens can be bolted. When secured the holes can be filled with wood or plastic filler before being painted.
As these seats are permanently fixed the painting job should be first class with priming coat, undercoat and finishing coat using good quality paints.
