Decreased Crime
A decrease in crimes and offences reported in Christchurch in the first quarter of this, year, compared with the same period last year, was attributed by the Commissioner of Police (Mr G. C. Urquhart) in an interview in Christchurch to the new police patrol system introduced this year. “The inquiry, incident and crime car patrols, giving a 24hour service in many areas and 18 hours in others provides better and swifter police service to the public,” Mr Urquhart said. During the first quarter in Christchurch, crimes and offences numbered 5026, a decrease of 545 on the first quarter of last year. "The new patrol systems have only just been introduced in Christchurch. With more experience they will become more efficient. More men and more cars have just been allocated to the police in Christchurch,” he said. Mr Urquhart said that last year 19,955 crimes and offences were reported in the Christchurch district, and 51.4 per cent had been cleared. “This is a high rate of crime clearance for a city the size of Christchurch. The efficient and dedicated service of the policemen in Christchurch is to be commended,” he said.
