King’s Cross Tunnel
SYDNEY. A 510,600,000 road tunnel will change the face of King's Cross, Sydney’s cosmopolitan centre and the most densely populated area in Australia. Traffic between the city and the eastern suburbs will travel by a fourdane tunnel under King’s Cross, at present a bottleneck of intersections. The New South Wales Gov. ernment plans to start work on the jSroject next year and to complete it by 1973. The project involves approximately 700 ft of open cutting, 800 ft of eut-and-cover tunnel and associated roads. Construction of the tunnel will require resumption by the Government of about two acres of mainly old residential buildings. Tenders will be called for development of this land when the tunnel has been cut and covered. The sale of the land—on a high ridge with superb views of Sydney harbour—will reduce the cost of the project to an estimated $10,000,000. Australian News and Information Bureau.
