RACING North Island Jockeys For Riccarton

North Island jockeys will be at Riccarton in strength for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s May meeting next week. W. D. Skelton, who won on Meldie at Trentham last week, will again ride the three*year*old in the main race, the May Handicap, and has also been engaged for Senator Jack, Pavoluss, and Walaroo. Beau Knight, a stablemate of Meldie, may be another of Skelton’s mounts.

R. B. Marsh, the successful young Hastings rider, has been engaged to ride His Lordship in the May Handicap.,

Marsh might show to the best advantage on the Riccarton stayer because he is left-handed, and Mr A. G. Bailey’s chestnut has been i difficult to ride because of hisl tendency to lug in. Marsh will also ride Aeoli-; an, Fathom Five, and Parwin.,

Successful Combination H. N. Rauhihi, who won on both Billy Joe and Domic at the North Canterbury meeting on March 31, will ride this Riccarton pair again next week. He has also been engaged for Chilli Bean, a stablemate of Billy Joe. Dory, a stablemate of Domic, and Strathboy.

N. Eastwood, who has had much success at recent South Island meetings, will ride Harold Bank and Watchman in main races at the C.J.C. meeting; also Master Leigh, Mr Rhee, and Court Star. R A. Jenkins will come: south to ride Silver Kingdom' in the Haast Steeplechase. I Silver Kingdom won this! race in the hands of R. K.j Moir last year, and might be i a match for the best of the: visitors next Tuesday. Schooled Well I Indian Chief, a second re-! presentative for Riccarton I stables in the Haast Steeple-i chase, and the runner-up to| Silver Kingdom last year, schooled well at Riccarton yesterday. The apprentice G. Jackson rode Indian Chief over six fences on the trial steeplechase course, beginning and ending with the second of the brush double. Mr J. D. Gregan’s King’s Command gelding was in a little close at the last fence, otherwise his display was good, and notable for the speed with which he got away from his fences. There was little galloping on the No. 1 grass because of barrier trials from the five furlongs on the outside of the course proper. Hombre was responsible for j one of the feature trials on the No. 1 grass when he sped over half a mile in 48 2-ssec. j beating Seminole by three i lengths. t Hombre is of little account!) on rain-affected tracks and!r his connections are hoping for | ? firm footing for the Westport | , Handicap next week.

Golden Promise, which joined P. H. Jones's team recently, sprinted half a mile in 49 4-ssec. time equalled later by the two-year-olds Pavoluss and Screened. Pavoluss, a winner at RicScarton at Easter, is one of ithe early favourites for the

Lewis Pass Handicap next week.

J. R. Shaw’s pair, Aeolian and Billy Joe, sprinted six furlongs, the last half mile in 50 2-ssec.

Domic could have bettered his 40 2-ssec for three furlongs. If he keeps straight, he might take up his winning record again in the Lewis Pass Handicap.

i Several of the horses to (run down from the starting I gate at the five furlongs were ! not called on to sustain their i I speed to the post. In one of the few trials of •interest, Donee and the unbraced Hidden Mystery finished on terms, two lengths I clear of Findaway.

Hidden Mystery, a bay filly 'by Mystery from Cloudy, will make her race debut in the [Lewis Pass Handicap next [ week.
