GIRL BALLOONIST IN AIR RACE.—Miss Christine Turnbull, aged 20, the only licensed balloon pilot in Britain, and the first woman to pilot a balloon across the English Channel, about to take off from Farnborough, Hampshire, for Heathrow Airport, London. Miss Turnbull left the Post Office Tower in a 1902 Panhard car, wearing the costume of a pioneer woman balloonist. Her balloon crashed into some bushes only 10 miles from Farnborough.
