AUCKLAND, May 13.
Fines totalling $5OO were imposed on William John Crutchley by Mr Justice Speight in the Supreme Court .at Auckland in place of a ■prison sentence imposed in I the Auckland Magistrate’s (Court by Mr J. H. Murray, S.M.
His Honour was delivering | a reserved judgment in an appeal against conviction and sentence brought by Crutchley, aged 32, a newspaper editor, and Censored Publications, Ltd. ■ Both Crutchley and the firm ipleaded not guilty to five charges of selling an indecent document, five editions of the newspaper, “Censored.” Mr Murray fined the firm $lOO on each charge and sentenced Crutchley to one month’s imprisonment on each charge, the terms to be concurrent. His Honour upheld the coneviction and sentence against 'the company. He upheld the (conviction against Crutchley I but replaced the prison term with a fine of $lOO on each charge and gave him two years to pay.
Mr L. W. Brown, Q.C., with him Mr W. B. Yolland, appeared for Crutchley and Mr S. B. Grieve for the Crown.
